White Pelican & more

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

I have more birds from last weekend's visit to Blackwater NWR. Besides all the winter ducks at Blackwater we also saw a White Pelican. I have been told it is injured and has become a regular bird of Blackwater.

This was my first time seeing the White Pelican at Blackwater during previous trips we missed seeing them.

A Ring-necked Duck couple, as you can see the brownish looking female looks much different then the male.

I believe I have seen the Coots during all my visit to Blackwater NWR

On the way home we stopped for lunch at Kent Island a restaurant called THE NARROWS, great crab cakes here. On their parking I found this cute Killdeer.

Also from the restaurants parking lot I sighted this male Greater Scaup along with a couple of female Scaups. My field guide says the Great er Scaups have the rounded heads and the Lesser Scaup has a peaked crown on the rear of its head.

Two female Scaups, heads tucked and each with one eye peeping out. Thanks for stopping by to see my birds and I always appreciate your nice comments.

Join in and post your birdies and to see more beautiful and wonderful bird photos please visit:

  2. Oh Eileen,
You are so lucky to see a white pelican!! Growing up on the Florida ocean coastline - all of our pelicans are various shades of grey. Didn't know about them until Gail from Louisiana posted photos of the white pelicans!! They are lovely!! Hope his injury won't kill him!! Nice shots!

  10. The killdeer is one of my favorites. Such dramatic markings and funny little movements they make. Love the blue tint in the water where the coots are swimming.

  11. Dangit, hit publish too soon. Also wanted to say that the pelican photo is beautiful, but I'm so sad that he's injured. :(

  12. Eileen I can't get over how many birdy places you have nearby where you can visit and take such varied shots. Like you I think the politicians should find money for wildlife; it's essential to our mental and physical wellbeing to get out outdoors and close to nature. Do they want us all to become couch potatos and end up both brain and body dead?

  50. You have a lovely variety of birds both here and on the last post Eileen. The White Pelicans are lovely, so fluffy looking it is interesting to see the birds we have in common such as the Coots and your Kildeer are very similar to our Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers. We also have Shovelers and ocassionaly see Lesser Scaup here too. Your Great Blue Heron is very much like our Grey Heron.

By the way, Ding Darling is a wonderful name ;-)

  68. What a great post! It instantly brought up memories of my brother and I camping at Blackwater (MANY years ago!) and awaking to the sound of tens of thousands of Canada Geese. They were leaving their roosts just before dawn and were so loud we couldn't hear each other shouting!

    Very nice photographs!
